Gallery

The gallery is more like a crowded storeroom; Zulu headrests with deep patinas frame a wall displaying milk pails and elegant beer pots. A crowd of colourful Cewa masks, with varying expressions, stare out across the elephant skinned Tonga drums lying silent in the middle of the room. The sweet smells of butterfat and ochre from the Himba items emit from a large box, which is only opened on request!

In the bath tub Zulu shields and hunting spears stand amongst large “mama and baby” baobab dolls and the kitchen is packed precariously with wooden stools and chairs, Swazi bowls and meat trays.

The sooty smell permeates throughout the house and one can imagine the sounds of the village as you ponder on the unusual sight. Outside, amongst the ceremonial drums and large beer storage pots, you can relax and look out across the Atlantic Ocean.
